The Long Goodbye

John Williams / Johnny Mercer

" The Long Goodbye" is one of the very last true noirs, made before the current vogue for "neo-noir" which so often relies on outward style rather than content.  Noir in the 40s wasn't the "romantic" side of America's underbelly we might think of it today.  It was essentially nasty, violent and seedy.  With this film, Altman has ensured that Noir has progressed; not been set in aspic.  Elliot Gould's oddball Philip Marlowe may be different, but he is still unmistakably downbeat Chandler.
