I'd Rather Have The Blues

Frank De Vol

"I'd Rather Have The Blues" is from Robert Aldrich's apocalyptic interpretation of Mickey Spillane's classic "Kiss Me Deadly."  A more-graphic-than-usual slice of American nihilism, it starred Ralph Meeker as ultra-violent Private Dick Mike Hammer and Gaby Rogers as psychotic Femme-Fatale Lily Carver.  "I'd Rather Have The Blues" appears twice in the movie; once sung by Nat King Cole over a car radio as the credits roll (somewhat disconcertingly upside-down) and a second time by the ubiquitous night-club singer (the lushly-monikered Madi Comfort).  Strange then, that as far as I know, there has never been a full recording of this song whose bleak vision sums up the World of Noir better than a thousand martini-dry one-liners...
